While this is technically part of a series (something I did not know until I had already picked up the book), it reads very well as a standalone. I would call this a mystery far more than I would a thriller. There are certainly some psychologically twisty aspects of the book, though, which kept me engaged. The writing style feels natural and flows very well and there were several points in the read where I couldn’t get myself to put it down (even though I very much needed to get some sleep).
I think the biggest win of this book for me was Mercedes as a character – I want more. And luckily for me, Hutchinson has at least two other novels to explore with Mercedes! Four stars, definitely!
Starting Strong!
Kicking off the discussion for the January book of the month pick.
I devoured this book. It was an extremely fast read, which I love. Especially because I have been reading a lot of longer books recently, so it was a welcome break. Themes I enjoyed within the novel: autonomy, second-chances, regrets and how fear can paralyze you, and ultimately perspective.
Was it a masterpiece? Probably not, but it certainly got the job done. Haig connected the reader to Nora, made her both likeable and frustrating, and you were really rooting for her by the end – whether it was in support of her original goal or her regained sense of self, that’s up to you! I also enjoyed his writing style, which was one of the reasons I finished it so quickly (two separate reading sessions of a couple hours each). So, yeah, 4 stars.
