If someone told you to color outside the lines, what would that mean to you?
It’s as though everyone is given the same picture, but told they can color it however they want. Society’s only expectation is that you stay inside the lines laid out for you. For some people that is far too confining, and they begin to push those boundaries – they color outside the lines. So, to me, the concept of coloring outside the lines can be anything that breaks down society’s norms, whether it’s non-traditional hair colors, piercings, openness about sex and sexuality (sex work included), chosen singledom; really anything seen as rebellious or different. But that’s the thing: differences are, ironically, the things that connect us – they add fun and variety to what could otherwise be an entirely mundane existence – so why would I want to color my picture the same as someone else? Why would I want to confine myself to the expectations and limitations laid out by those who don’t know me? To live in such a way seems trivial and wasteful – I want to make an impact!
