Writing Prompt of the Week

Written by:

Write a poem about your current emotional state without using any pronouns. (Remember, “it” is a pronoun too!)

Looking up at the clouds
with newly opened eyes
Funny – was the sky always
so blue?
So vibrant?
A new feeling swells
within –
An unfamiliar, but
not unwelcome feeling.
There is warmth,
but also pressure, as
if the heart is beating
stronger, trying to escape.
Yet simultaneously, breathing
is now easier.
Lungs so effortlessly
fill and expand with
the sweetest air ever tasted.

A memory begins to
step forward, with small
paces, careful to
not startle the senses.
Perhaps this feeling
is not so foreign after
all – just hidden in
the recesses of the mind.
Forgotten since childhood.
Now, to remember
the name of this emotion…

Not happiness,
nor anxiety,
nor excitement,
or even comfort.

Ah, hope!
Welcome back, old friend.

Now it’s your turn. If you’re comfortable sharing your answer to the prompt in the comments, go for it! If you’d rather send it to me through the Contact page, no judgement, just write!

P.S. I’m so sorry this is late – fully intended to post on Friday, but work was crazy and it slipped my mind!!
